10 Ways to Improve User Experience of your website

As much as functionality matters, there is no denial that we are living in a world where user experience plays a huge role in leaving first impression and converting traffic into leads. Now if you are reading this article, most likely you are a webmaster or a small business so you won't be having enough UX and design budget to hire a high-end designing and web interface firm who can do multiple testing but this should not stop you in improving your site's user experience.

Here are 10 ways (I will update few more, if possible you can try to add few from your side too) you can improve your sites user experience.

1. Check the loading speed of your site
- Who would want to check a site that is slow and takes forever to load? Given the number of options that people have in the World Wide Web, you have a number of sites that you have to compete with. According to statistics, 40% of people would actually leave a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load, not to mention Google gives more value to sites which loads faster. Here are 2 older posts which should help you, 12 ways to make your site load faster and List of 15 Websites to test your site loading Speed and Optimization

2. Do not use popups, overlays, interstitial ads - Lets admin it, they just suck. It is fine if you are looking to earn additional revenue and leads but don't overdo it as it only increases bounce rate of your site.

3. Create interactive content - You can embed widgets, have infinite page loads, cross link content of other sources (like using slideshare presentations or scribd docs in a blog post), use web forms (like google docs) etc to make your content more interactive.

4. Make social media part of your website - Everyone hates to register to website so why not use google+, Facebook and twitter registration option. Similar for comments, use Facebook comments or disqus platform. Do add social media sharing widgets too.

5. Include images - If you are looking to increase the user experience of people who visit your site and not get them bored, use informative relevant images that can keep them glued to what you are saying or offering. You can use flickr for finding royalty free images. EDIT - Do check this post too which has a nice list of such sites.

6. Have clean design with menus and navigation - The colors and the type of graphics that you use on your website can contribute to the experience of visitors. Also, what are the types of fonts that you love to use on your website? Helvetica for instance has become popular among web designers given the impression it can leave the audience. For these things, you need an adept web designer who can give you the most responsive but aesthetically appealing site.

7. Have a website that is mobile friendly - Use responsive web design for your website so it loads properly in all mobile and table resolutions. With mobile web users almost touching pc users, it is a must to have a mobile compatible website. At InBoundio, I am using bootstrap which is a css library which is perfect to build responsive sites. If not CSS libraries, you can use various cms plugins and framework to have a mobile site.

8. Create pages for specific actions - It is important for a website to put information into chunks. Create a website that has different pages for specific needs. For instance, if you have a physical store, a direction page might come in handy. Or perhaps, a contact us page is a good way to get people to interact easier.

9. Get feedback on your site structure, design and loading speed - use sites like fivesecondtest, criticue etc to get feedback on your site design, structure, whether people are able to understand what it is as well as loading speed.

10. Answer queries, have chat widgets, have your contact details, phone numbers and social media links It is difficult to trust an online business if they have no contact us page and have no means to contact them. Similarly use chat widgets (which is must for any B2B or B2C business) and may be a faq section too.

If you know any more such ways, do add them in comments.
